TORONTO — The McGuinty government is investing $225,000 in the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto for marketing and program expansion, Tourism Minister Jim Bradley announced today.
“Supporting events like the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto provides an economic boost to our communities, and memorable experiences for our visitors,” said Bradley. “The Ontario government is pleased to support festivals, events and attractions that boost tourism.”
A $75,000 Celebrate Ontario grant has helped the Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto create three new races and expand grandstand seating. In addition, funding of $150,000 will help cover the cost of television, print and radio advertising throughout Ontario, Quebec, and Ohio.
Running July 6 - 8 at Exhibition Place, the Steelback Grand Prix will feature world-class racing, musical entertainment, extreme sports, acrobatic performers, performance racing go-karts, interactive games and exhibits. The event generates an estimated $50 million of economic activity. Television broadcast of the event typically reach more than 2.4 million Canadian viewers and 4.9 million US viewers. Internationally, the event reaches over 48 million viewers worldwide in 195 countries.
“We’re so appreciative of the Ontario government’s continued support of our event,” said Charlie Johnstone, President of the Grand Prix Association of Toronto. “This kind of support gives us the extra boost we need to continue to keep our event relevant and exciting for our visitors.”
The Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto is among dozens of events and festivals supported by the Ontario government. Marketing support for these events encourages increased tourism and strengthens Ontario's tourism industry by assisting local organizations to promote their events to the people of Ontario and beyond.
“A healthy tourism industry supports Ontario’s high quality of life,” said Bradley. “Festivals and events increase tourism, bringing new visitors to communities across Ontario, contributing to a strong and prosperous economy.”
