INVESTING IN HURONIA HISTORIAL PARKS

 McGuinty Government Growing Tourism In Southern Georgian Bay

Ontario is supporting the tourism economy of the Southern Georgian Bay region with a significant capital investment in Huronia Historical Parks.

 

The provincial government is investing $1.38 million to improve infrastructure and strengthen the appeal of Huronia Historical Parks as a tourist attraction.

 

The funding is being used for:

• Finishing touches to the multi-year restoration of the Officers’ Quarters at Discovery Harbour, which re-opened to the public on July 5 after almost a decade of extensive renovations
• A walkway to this important heritage building that is compliant with the Ontarians with Disability Act 
• Roofing and repairs to modern and historic buildings at Discovery Harbour
• Accessibility upgrades and completion of the student luncheon room at Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons and
• Repair and rebuilding of the waterway outlet and adjacent walking path and palisade wall from the Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons historic site to the Wye River.

• Huronia Historical Parks is enjoying strong attendance in 2008 with an increase of six per cent year to date over last year.
• The Officers' Quarters provides visitors with the opportunity to learn first-hand the challenges of soldiers and other military and civilian personnel at this isolated outpost in Upper Canada.
