GANANOQUE – The McGuinty government is helping promote the Festival of the Islands through an investment of $12,500 to cover the cost of newspaper, radio, and television advertising, Tourism Minister Jim Bradley announced today.
“We are pleased to help the Festival of the Islands attract more visitors and boost tourism,” said Bradley. “This festival has broad appeal to both visitors and residents. With 70,000 people expected to attend, it will generate more than $2.5 million for the local economy.”
Running August 10 to 19 in Gananoque, the Festival of the Islands is celebrating its 16th anniversary. The event features theatrical presentations, baby shows, dog shows, mini golf plus ten nights of musical entertainment. It concludes with a fireworks display aboard a barge in the St. Lawrence River.
“We really appreciate the support from the Ministry of Tourism,” said Kathrine Christensen, the event’s sponsorship director. “Now we’ll be able to expand our marketing efforts throughout eastern Ontario and western Quebec.”
The Festival of the Islands is among dozens of events and festivals supported by the Ontario government. Marketing support for these events encourages increased tourism and strengthens Ontario's tourism industry by assisting local organizations to promote their events to the people of Ontario and beyond.
“I want to congratulate everyone who helped organize this event and the volunteers who have worked to make the Festival of the Islands a success year after year,” said John Gerretsen, MPP for Kingston and the Islands. “Supporting such events like this one gives a substantial economic boost to our area, and creates a memorable experience for our visitors.”
