UXBRIDGE — The McGuinty government is investing $88,000 in the Highlands of Durham Games, running July 20 to 22 in Uxbridge, for marketing and program expansion, Tourism Minister Jim Bradley announced today.
“Supporting events like the Highlands of Durham Games provides an economic boost to the community and a memorable experience for our visitors,” said Bradley. “The Ontario government is pleased to support festivals, events and attractions that boost tourism.”
An $80,000 Celebrate Ontario grant is helping the Highlands of Durham Games create new entertainment experiences expected to attract new and repeat visitors. In additional $8,000 will help cover the cost of television and newspaper advertising in southern Ontario.
The Highlands of Durham Games feature traditional Scottish athletic games, Highland Dance competitions, children’s activities and performances by the Rankin Sisters.
“We’re very excited to receive this support from the Ministry of Tourism,” said Doug Moffatt, the event’s director. “This grant is helping us host two performances by the Rankin Sisters – and that keeps the event fresh and exciting for visitors and local residents alike.”
“The Highlands of Durham Games are important for Uxbridge,” said Wayne Arthurs, MPP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge. “I want to congratulate everyone who helps organize this event and the volunteers who work to make it such a great success.”
The Highlands of Durham Games is one of 57 festivals receiving funds from Celebrate Ontario. Marketing support for these events encourages increased tourism and strengthens Ontario's tourism industry by assisting local organizations to promote their events to the people of Ontario and beyond.
“A healthy tourism industry supports Ontario’s high quality of life,” said Bradley. “Festivals and events increase tourism, bringing new visitors to communities across Ontario, contributing to a strong and prosperous economy.”
