Fort Henry Unveils New Rideau Canal175th Anniversary Exhibit Donated By Parks Canada

The new Rideau Canal 175th Anniversary exhibit was officially opened during the 69th season Opening Day ceremonies held at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada on Sunday, May 20th.

This interpretive exhibit was created as part of the overall Rideau 175 program to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Rideau Canal. The exhibit illustrates the thematic links between the Rideau Canal, Fort Henry and the Kingston Fortifications National Historic Sites. Through displays and artifacts, it brings to life the history of the canal - its construction, its role throughout history, and its importance, along with the Kingston fortifications, as a lasting symbol of turbulent times in Canadian history. The exhibit will be housed at Fort Henry, a historic fort constructed in the 1830s to safeguard the southern entrance of the newly completed Rideau Canal.

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission, an agency of the Province of Ontario, operates Fort Henry under an agreement with Parks Canada.  The St. Lawrence Parks Commission brings the site to life every summer, telling the story of the fort through the internationally renowned Fort Henry Guard, guided tours, museum displays and special events.  "We are delighted to have this new addition to the exhibits at Fort Henry," said John Roberston, Manager, Fort Henry National Historic Site. "This exhibit will help our visitors understand the important links between the early British military establishments here in Eastern Ontario."

Events also linked directly to the Rideau Canal 175th Anniversary is the Sunset Ceremony Series, beginning Wednesday, June 27th at 7:30 P.M. and every consecutive Wednesday until the finale on August 29th; The Fort Henry Tattoo 2007 July 27th and 28th and the day following the UNESCO World Heritage Designation announcement in Ottawa, is the July 1st 'K-Rockin' The Rideau' Outdoor Concert on Fort Henry Hill from 11:00 A.M. until 11:00 P.M., featuring Bedouin Soundclash.
