MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE BLUES AND JAZZ FESTIVAL

Festivals and Events Help Build A Strong And Prosperous Economy

MISSISSAUGA — The McGuinty government is helping to increase tourism by investing $53,750 in the Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival taking place September 5 - 9 in Port Credit Memorial Park, Tourism Minister Jim Bradley announced today.

“Festivals and events like the Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival increase tourism, bringing new visitors to communities across Ontario, and contribute to a strong and prosperous economy,” said Bradley.

“This funding helps us to have a second free stage in Memorial Park this year,” said Bruce J. Forth, the event’s director. “A variety of Canadian performers will be featured including Valdy, Murray McLaughlin, Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church.   We anticipate this will greatly increase attendance by drawing visitors from all over Ontario, Canada and the United States.”

This investment comes from the $4-million Celebrate Ontario program, which supports the growth of 57 existing festivals and events by funding new marketing and programming enhancements. Since October 2003, the McGuinty government has invested more than $15 million to market Ontario’s festivals and events.

Supporting in the Southside Shuffle Jazz and Blues Festival is just one example of how the McGuinty government is strengthening the tourism industry in Mississauga. This past May Bradley announced an investment of almost $74,000 in the Mississauga Waterfront Festival for marketing and program expansion.

In addition, the McGuinty government invested $500,000 to redevelop the Port Credit Memorial Park. The park provides valuable green space and recreational opportunities that contribute to the quality of life in the city and offers tremendous potential to attract visitors.

“Our government is pleased to support festivals, events and attractions that boost tourism all year long,” said Bradley “Supporting such events give a substantial economic boost to local communities and a memorable experience for our visitors.”
