Introduction from Tourism Minister Monique Smith

Monique Smith

Tourism is a vital component of local economies in every region of Ontario. We have wonderful natural, cultural and historic attractions in every corner of the province.

In the face of growing global competition for travellers, we need to ensure we are making the right investments and doing all we can to foster the right environment so that tourism continues to be an economic driver in communities across Ontario.

That is why the McGuinty government asked Greg Sorbara to conduct an extensive Tourism Competitiveness Study to identify challenges and opportunities, and to provide recommendations to revitalize and grow tourism across the province.

The result, Discovering Ontario: A report on the future of tourism outlines strategies and proposals that can help us realize the full potential of our many tourism assets. The research that was conducted, and that is ongoing, will inform government and industry decision making for years to come.

I want to thank Greg Sorbara and his team for the great work they have done. I would also like to thank the hundreds of industry partners and leaders who have contributed their ideas, hopes and their vision for tourism in this province.
